DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE SECURES MAJOR EFFICIENCIES BY OPTING FOR CABLE & WIRELESS OPTUS OUTSOURCING

Cable and Wireless Optus's Outsourcing Division has been awarded a $3 million contract to manage the voice communications network of the Department of Defence throughout Queensland.

John Filmer, Director, Enterprise Division, Cable & Wireless Optus, commented: "Optus is managing the provision of telephony services across all of Queensland for the Department of Defence. Our service provides the Department with full management of over 12,000 voice services, tailored to their needs, together with a complete understanding of the extent and costs of its voice network in the State."

The decision to choose Cable & Wireless Optus in Queensland resulted from an outsourcing process due mainly to the Defence Reform Programme in 1997. That Review identified the need to save money in non-core Defence business areas and redirect those savings towards core Defence business areas such as capital equipment and fighting personnel.

Cable & Wireless Optus' responsibilities in Queensland include management of all carrier services; comprehensive billing services, including allocation of all supplier bills to cost centres; the provision of help-desk services for all enquiries; and management of all voice network equipment such as PABXs, desk handsets and mobile phones.
