While the Cable & Wireless challenge has been ready since December it has been hampered by weather and not having permission from the Chinese to fly over their territory. As a result this endeavour will attempt to complete the first global navigation without passing over Chinese Territory. Permission was withdrawn following the illegal entry into China by ICO Global Challenge (Richard Branson's attempt) in December.
This attempt differs from the many before it as it incorporates technology developed over previous attempts, including the use of kerosene rather than propane. This allows storage in lighter unpressurised containers which means the balloon to carry more fuel and stay up longer.
Cable and Wireless, as an integrated communication company, is adding real value to the attempt by ensuring this adventure can be watched by a global audience via a website. The crew of two will break news on the website and include their day to day experiences.
The technical highlights of the site - www.cwballoon.com - will include a video diary from the pilots filmed on board using the 12 different cameras inside and outside the balloon's gondola. This footage will be compressed and sent to Mission Control in London by satellite daily. Still pictures, wind speeds, altitude and position will be sent and updated regularly.
Visitors to the Cable & Wireless website will be able to take a three dimensional tour through the gondola and the pilots' point of view. The website will have sections for children as well so they can follow the adventure and learn about the world and science at the same time - as well as having a little fun.
