New rules were introduced on 28 October 2024 by the Australian Federal Government under the Telecommunications (Emergency Call Service) Amendment Determination 2024 (No. 1). These rules were introduced to address concerns over Triple Zero (000) calling due to the closure of 3G networks in Australia. They set out the requirements for what Australian telecommunication network providers need to do under the amended Emergency Call Service (ECS) Determination and information for customers impacted by these changes.
What’s changed?
Under the ECS Determination, Optus is legally required to:
- identify mobile phones that are unable to call Triple Zero (000) over 4G VoLTE,
- notify impacted customers,
- block these devices from accessing the Optus mobile network, and
- give assistance to customers to access alternative mobile phones
Mobile phones that are identified as ‘unsafe’ or incompatible with Triple Zero (000) calling over 4G VoLTE, will not be able to make or receive calls/texts or use mobile data once blocked. To connect to the Optus network, you’ll need a compatible 4G/5G device.
How do I know if my device is compatible?
Some older handsets as well newer 4G/5G models may not meet these standards, including those purchased overseas or from a retailer selling imported phones.
The phones available for sale on the Optus site or in Optus stores have been tested to ensure they are compatible with the Optus network.
However, if you have purchased or have been given a refurbished phone, second-hand phone, or a phone that was purchased overseas, check that it’s compatible using our Device Checker tool.
