How to add a Public Trustee or Public Guardian to act on behalf of an account holder

This article provides information on adding a Public Trustee or Public Guardian to make enquiries and changes on behalf of an Optus account holder.

For information on more general account access options, see our article on Third Party Authorities.

What is a Public Trustee and Public Guardians?

A Public Trustees and Public Guardians, also known as a State Trustee, are government established agencies appointed in each state and territory in Australia.

They were established to provide assistance to persons on organisations managing their assets which can include (but are not limited to) property, shares and money.

When a Public Trustee or Public Guardian is appointed, the authority to make decisions on the Optus account is removed from the account holder and given to the Public Trustee or Public Guardian.

For this to occur, the Public Trustee or Public Guardian must notify Optus of their appointment and provide us with supporting documentation and relevant account information, which can be emailed to us at PowerofAttorney@optus.com.au. The following information must be included in the email:

  • Certificate of Management or Certificate of Authority (also known as a Letter of Authority)
  • Financial Management Order
  • The customer's account number
  • The customer's full name

Once we receive these documents and information, we will notify the Trustee or Guardian within 4 business days via email.

Once loaded, for any enquiries related to the account, a Public Trustee or Public Guardian can contact our Specialist Care team on 1800 507 581. The team is available to assist during these hours:

  • Mon - Fri: 8am- 8pm (AEST)
  • Sat: 8am - 4pm (AEST)
  • Sun: Closed

When a Trustee or Guardian is suspended or removed, Optus must be notified of the revocation. The authority on the account will then be given back to the account holder.

For the revocation to be effective, the Public Trustee, Public Guardian or account holder must notify Optus of the revocation. Supporting documentation and relevant account information can be emailed to us directly to PowerofAttorney@optus.com.au. The following information must be included in the email:

  • Revocation Order
  • The customer's account number
  • The customer's full name

Once we receive these documents and information, we'll notify the Trustee or Guardian within 4 business days via email and send an SMS to the account holder with confirmation of the revocation. The ownership and control will then be given back to the account holder.
