About nbnTM Fibre to the Premise (FTTP)

nbnTM Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) is internet that reaches your home via fibre-optic cable laid in the ground or on overhead lines. Most nbnTM Fibre (FTTP) connections will have a new fibre-optic cable run right up to the premises.

A wall-mounted nbnTM Connection Box measuring 206mm x 180mm will be installed inside your home.

Installing nbnTM for the first time

If the premises has never been connected to the nbnTM before, consider the following:

  • If you rent, get permission from your landlord
  • Consider where you would like your modem and the wall-mounted connection box to be located. They should be close together, easily accessible but not likely to be bumped, and in a location with good ventilation and no extreme temperatures
  • Make sure you or an English-speaking person aged 18+ will be present for the whole appointment to discuss the location of the connection box along with other any questions about the installation

If you’re transferring an existing phone service to Optus, here are some tips to ensure a smooth transfer experience.

Optus Self-Install Kit delivery

Your Optus Self-Install Kit will arrive on or before your installation date. You can track the progress of your delivery in My Optus app.

nbnTM appointment

If your premises has been connected to the nbn previously, an nbnTM appointment may not be necessary. We’ll confirm this with you via text / email.

If your premises is being connected to the nbnTM for the first time, an nbnTM technician will need to install a Premises Connection Device (PCD) on the outside of your home plus an nbnTM connection box inside your home. This may involve digging a trench, drilling a small hole in the wall and clearing vegetation.

The nbnTM technician will arrive in the following time slots:

  • Morning: 9am - 12pm
  • Afternoon: 1pm - 5pm

Make sure you or an English-speaking person aged 18+ can be present for the whole nbnTM appointment. Some complex installations can take up to 8 hours.

You can view your appointment details in My Optus app.

Modem installation

Once the nbnTM connection is complete, you can install your Optus WiFi Modem. See our Quick Start Guide for help.

Using an Optus-supplied modem allows us to provide support for connecting and troubleshooting your equipment. It will also allow us to confirm that your service is working, which is required by law for nbn™ services.

If you decide not to use the modem we supply, the support we can provide may be limited.

If you have opted for a professional installation, you can view your appointment details via My Optus app.
