About nbnTM Fibre to the Curb

Diagram of FTTC connection

With Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), nbnTM lays optic fibre cable to a distribution point unit (DPU) located close to your premises, usually in a pit near the street. From here, the existing copper network is used to connect to your premises.

A small, freestanding nbnTM Connection Box (pictured below) will connect your Optus modem to the nbnTM network.

nbnTM appointment

If your premises is being connected to the nbnTM for the first time, an nbnTM technician will need to install your nbnTM Connection Box. The appointment can take up to 4 hours to complete.

Make sure you or an English-speaking person aged 18+ can be present for the whole appointment.

The technician will install and test your nbnTM Connection Box, then leave it unplugged next to your wall socket so that your existing services keep working until the date your nbnTM service and modem are activated.

The nbnTM technician will arrive in the following time slots:

  • Morning: 9am - 12pm
  • Afternoon: 1pm - 5pm

Some complex installations can take up to 8 hours.

Modem installation

Once the nbnTM technician has installed your nbnTM Connection Box, you can connect your Optus WiFi modem following the instructions in our Quick Start Guide.

Using an Optus-supplied modem allows us to provide support for connecting and troubleshooting your equipment. It will also allow us to confirm that your service is working, which is required by law for nbn™ services.

If you decide not to use the modem we supply, the support we can provide may be limited.

If you have opted for a professional installation but want more information, see the Professional vs Self Install Information page.
