What you need to know about nbn wiring

Discovering that the nbn® is available in your area can be an exciting revelation. You may be able to access fast internet speeds so that you can catch your favourite shows online, keep in touch with your family and friends around the world and stream the latest hit music. So like many of our customers, you're probably raring to go!

But before you switch over to the nbn you'll need to find out which technology is the best option for your address. To do this, just enter your address in our simple nbn address checker. If service is available at your premise it will be coloured in either light or dark purple to represent either fixed line or fixed wireless broadband.

If your address is not coloured or if it is coloured brown or green, service is not yet available to you. To stay in the loop you can sign up to Optus NBN updates.

The type of technology available to your home or business will dictate what kind of wiring is needed on site.

If you live in a new development and are connecting via fixed line fibre, your wiring may already be in place. However, if you need to connect to the nbn once service is available in your area we can help you to organise a visit from a registered nbn technician.

A standard installation from an nbn technician for the nbn Fibre network usually includes:

• Fibre optic wiring from the boundary of your property to your nbn utility box, located on the outside of your home, or in the basement of your building.
• Fibre optic wiring from the nbn utility box to your network termination device (NTD), located inside your home.
• Optional wiring connecting your NTD to a power supply unit that provides back up power in the event of a blackout, also located in your home. Not all providers support battery back-up, so check before signing up if you have a medical alarm or require back-up service.

If you Opt for an Optus Professional Installation you’ll also receive:

• Wiring from your NTD to your Optus modem which can be used to create a wifi network in your home.
• Integration of existing in-home wiring and phone sockets with your Optus NBN connection, including testing of phone extensions.
• Connect and configure your computer for your new NBN connection. Includes Internet Browser and Email setup, plus a broadband speed test to ensure you're getting the most from your connection.
• Show you how to connect your WiFi devices to your Optus modem so your whole household can be online at the same, over the one NBN connection.

You can discuss with your nbn technician where you would prefer to house your NTD and Optus modem. They will be able to tell you if it is advisable or possible and if you will require a non-standard installation, which will incur an additional fee.

Here are some example scenarios in which you may require a non-standard installation, such as if you:

• Want to connect multiple smart TVs in different rooms in your house to the nbn.
• Want to connect an nbn phone to existing, or multiple sockets within your home
• Rely on a back to base security alarm service
• Want to house your NTD and Optus modem at a distance from your nbn utility box which will require more than 40m worth of fibre cabling.

Granny flats and outbuildings typically require you to extend an existing nbn linked to a unique address. If your granny flat does have a unique address you will have to get that address connected in its own right.

Lastly, all work must be conducted by a registered cabler accredited by the Australian Communications and Media Authority.
