With Comic-Con International around the corner, let’s take a look at the 10 comic book movie adaptations that everyone’s talking about.

Following a two-year hiatus, Comic-Con is finally coming back to the San Diego Convention Center on 21-24 July, to showcase the latest in animation, video games and everything comic book related - including the latest in cinema adaptations.

Whether you’re a DC or Marvel fan, the multi-universe storylines and ever-expanding list of characters still waiting to be introduced can be overwhelming to keep track of.

Not to worry though, we’ve rounded up 10 of the most anticipated comic book adaptations coming in 2023 to set your expectations right and start the fandom early.

Forewarning - there may be some spoilers ahead. Also please note these titles are yet unrated.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3

While the plot is currently unknown, it is confirmed that our favourite guardians from team leader Peter Quill to humble Mantis are back to tackle on their next adventure following the events of the Infinity War.

In this latest instalment, Will Poulter is also joining the cast as Adam Warlock. At this stage there has been no information released as to how Warlock will factor into the Guardians of the Galaxy universe - however based on comic book narratives, we do know that Warlock was created by a group of scientists and is an enemy of Thanos.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania is a 30-second movie in the Marvel universe with the main cast confirmed to return including Paul Rudd and Michelle Pfeiffer.

There’s been no media release or press conference regarding storyline yet, but we do know that crowd favourite, Bill Murray’s been added to the cast list in an un-confirmed role.

Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania is expected to be released on 17 February next year, as part of Phase Four in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Following an Oscar win for Best Animation Feature Film, Miles Morales returns for the next chapter in the Spider-Verse saga to face off against a villain more powerful than anything he’s faced before.

Jumping across the multi-verse, Morales must join Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to save the world from destructions and chaos. Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson and Nicholas Cage are slated to return for this sequel.

The Marvels

In an interesting turn of events, The Marvels combines the cinematic universe with television. The Marvels is a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson as the titular character – however within this instalment Ms Marvel and Monica Rambeau, who’ve only been in seen in the television series, join Captain Marvel to protect Earth.

The Marvels will also be the first MCU film to feature a Muslim superhero.

Black Canary

The DC Comics universe is certainly expanding with both hero and villain origin stories being given the big screen treatment.

Black Canary is the latest instalment and is a spin off from the Warner Bros’ 2020 ‘Birds of Prey’ starring Jurnee Smollett as Dinah Lance or in superhero terms the Black Canary herself.

While the plot is still unknown, Black Canary is one of the most recognised characters in DC and has audiences continually questioning whether she’s a villain with a good heart or a hero with a bad streak.

Blue Beetle

Adding to the DC Comics line up comes the first Latino lead live action hero – Blue Beetle. A Mexican teenager named Jamie Reyes played by Xolo Mariduena stumbles upon an alien beetle that gives him a superhero armour that can act as both a shield and weapon.

Still currently in production, the plot is still yet to be disclosed however, what we do know is that the cast also includes George Lopez, Susan Sarandon and Adriana Barraza.

The Flash

After starring as one of the main characters in the Justice League and having a minor feature in Suicide Squad, it was only a matter of time that the beloved Flash would get a standalone film.

The first teaser was debuted during a segment at DC Fandom 2021 where it was also announced that this storyline would be a loose adaptation of The Flashpoint storyline.

The interpretation of this arc has not yet been confirmed however The Flashpoint storyline follows Barry Allen (The Flash) waking up without his speedy powers in a completely different reality – he must somehow rediscover his abilities before it’s too late.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Despite being a point of discussion in the infamous Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard defamation case – the sequel to the 2018’s Aquaman is still going ahead and expected to be released sometime in March 2023.

The script has been kept under wraps however, audiences have been made aware that Aquaman must forge a new and uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally in the hope to save Atlantis and rest of the planet from downfall.

Madame Web

A spin-off from Spider-Man, Madame Web centres on a clairvoyant mutant with psychic sensory powers played by Dakota Johnson. Despite being a notable figure in the comic book world, Madame Web has never had her own series or solo storyline.

There’s been no press release or teaser regarding the plot, and it’s not yet been confirmed whether or not this movie will be an origin story.

In the comics though, Madame Web is never identified as a hero or a villain but more so a figure in between with her own motives.

Kraven the Hunter

Set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) alongside Venom and Morbius, Kraven the Hunter follows Russian immigrant Sergei Kravinoff on a mission to prove that he’s the greatest hunter of all time.

It’s been assumed that Kraven will prove himself as the greatest hunter by taking down the most difficult prey – speculation is that this may or may not be Spider-Man.

Slated to be the first superhero movie to be released in 2023, Kraven the Hunter stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular character with Academy Award winners Russell Crow and Ariana DeBose supporting.
