Do I Need to Switch to the nbn?

24 October 2019, 1:25 AM

The nbn® rollout is continuing on schedule, which means more and more Australians can connect to the network at their home or business. As Australia’s new broadband network, the nbn brings many benefits, but a common question is whether switching from your old internet or phone service is necessary.

The short answer is yes, if you currently have Optus Cable or ADSL (phone or internet) you will ultimately need to move away from your old home internet or phone connection to the nbn or another alternative. Other households may be already served by a fibre network other than the nbn and may not need to switch.

If your premises is nbn ready, then you have the option to switch to an nbn plan, like those provided by Optus. Switching to the nbn is not automatic, so ensure you have a think about which nbn plan is right for you when you sign up.

Depending on your current home phone or internet service the time you have before you must switch may vary. Generally, Optus ADSL customers have up to 18 months to switch away from their old internet or phone once their premises is nbn ready. Optus Cable customers, may have a shorter period of time to do so. The exact times and dates can vary, so please refer to any communications you have received from Optus or your existing internet service provider for details specific to your address.

The reason a switch will be necessary is because current ADSL and Optus Cable networks will be switched off and no longer available. If you do not switch in time you will lose your existing internet and phone services, so it’s important to act when the time comes. Switching to the nbn may also impact any security systems or medical alarms you use. Please check with the manufacturer of these systems to find out if they are compatible with the nbn.

However, while you will need to switch away from an old ADSL or Cable service, you are not actually required to switch to nbn. While the nbn may be the best and most convenient option for many households, there may be other alternatives for your home internet, such as Wireless Broadband.

Due to an increase in scam calls, it’s important you remain vigilant if anyone calls claiming to be from NBN Co telling you that you must switch immediately. NBN Co do not make unsolicited phone calls and you will generally be notified via mail by NBN Co as well as your current provider when the nbn is available in your area. If you are in any doubt as to who is calling you in relation to your internet or phone service you should hang up and call back on their official phone number. Also, be cautious of any unexpected technicians who arrive and claim to need to connect the nbn if you have not received prior notification of the work.

Making the switch to nbn may seem like a daunting process, but there are numerous benefits to moving across, like a choice of speed packs on your plan. Make sure you check out our nbn rollout map to see if the nbn is available in your area. If you have any questions about the nbn or how to make the switch, you can get in touch with our friendly team for support.
