Building your own home or buying a brand new one is an exciting and busy time. There’s a lot of things to consider and remember, especially if you’re building a new property. One of those important considerations will be your internet connection. For most new builds, the nbn® will likely be the best and most practical option. Fortunately, getting connected to the nbn with a new building should be a straight forward process. Let’s take a look at the steps you will most likely need to go through to get your new home nbn ready.
1. Check if Your Property Can Connect to the nbn
Even with a new build, you’ll still need to make sure the nbn is available in your area. One of the quickest ways to do this is by taking a look at our nbn rollout map and entering your address. After entering your location you’ll see a map of your area which will be covered with a block of colour. Purple means the nbn is available, brown means the nbn rollout is still in progress and white means that the work on the nbn hasn’t started yet (or in some cases may not be planned at all).
There may also be some additional information like the approximate date that the nbn will become available and the type of nbn technology that will be used. If you have any questions about nbn availability, you can ask us online or visit one of our stores.
2. Speak to your Builder or Developer
If you are in the process of building a new home, then make sure you speak with your builder or developer about your internet connection. Think about how you like to or will need to use the internet and in what rooms you will use it the most. It’s also worth considering which rooms you’d like a phone line connection in as well. You are welcome to have a chat with us at Optus or your preferred internet service provider too, because during the building process you may be able to request where the nbn supplied equipment is installed.
If you’re about to move in to a brand new, but already built, home then all you need to do is speak with an internet provider to start your nbn journey.
3. Choose an nbn Plan
Different nbn plans offer different advantages, such as unlimited data, home phone lines, nbn speed packs, entertainment extras and more. Make sure to check out our latest nbn plans and all the great extras they offer when doing your research. There’s also the option to choose between 24 month or month-to-month plans to ensure your nbn plan best suits your circumstances.
4. Setup Your Equipment
Depending on the nbn technology available to you, you may either need a professional installation or simply be able to do it yourself. If you choose a plan with Optus, we can sort you out with either and will let you know what you need to do. If you opt for or require a professional installation then additional charges may apply.
Once any installation requirements are sorted, then you can simply setup your modem (included on Optus nbn plans) and enjoy the benefits of your new nbn connection. If you’re using a WiFi network, make sure you place your equipment strategically, so you can get the fastest speeds from your connection.
