modem is the device that allows you to connect to the internet. It's usually connected to your home or business' phone service jack.

router enables you to connect multiple devices to create a network. When you link a modem and router you can connect multiple devices to the internet through wireless connections or Ethernet cables.

What does a modem or router do?

When you browse, download or stream online, your computer is exchanging data with another computer. This connection happens over the copper telephone network which sends and receives analogue signals as sound frequencies.

modem translates these analogue sound frequencies into digital data that the computer can understand. A router can then be connected to the modem to create a WiFi network.

A modem router does the same thing but combines these two devices into one piece of hardware. Most modems on the market today come with a router, including the modem provided to all new Optus nbn customers.
