Australian university students can put their creativity and innovation to the test by developing a unique Android mobile application for the second Optus and NICTA Unleash Your App competition, which opens today.
First launched in 2011, the 'Unleash Your App' competition seeks to identify exceptional and unique Android mobile apps developed by talented Australian uni students that make our lives easier. Entries are welcomed in six key areas: health and education, news and entertainment, social networking, utilities, productivity and lifestyle. Generous cash prizes, promotional and mentoring opportunities are up for grabs.
The 2011 winners developed a range of unique apps to enable Canberra commuters to search bus timetables and nearest stops more easily; Sydney-siders and Queenslanders to book taxis quickly and simply; and people looking for more convenience to assign notes to particular geographic locations.
Austin R. Bryan, Director of Optus Digital Media, said, "The first 'Unleash Your App' competition showcased how truly talented many of our Australian university students are. Last year's winners all had great ideas and demonstrated a real passion and enthusiasm for developing apps that can make our day to day activities more easy and convenient.
"Optus is excited to get behind talented Australian students for the second time by providing them with financial, marketing and coaching support to help make their mobile app a success. This competition is one of many initiatives that Optus proudly sponsors to support digital innovation in Australia."
This year's overall winner will receive a $5,000 cash prize, along with a Samsung Galaxy Note on the Optus network. To help turn the winning app into a commercial reality, the app may also have the chance of being sold and promoted on the Optus App Store. The first two runners-up will also receive generous cash prizes in addition to a smartphone on the Optus network. All three finalists will also have the opportunity to pick the brains of the industry's leading innovators from Optus and NICTA, in a 'Meet the Experts' mentoring workshop to help them fine-tune their app.
"Mobile technology has completely transformed the way we live and work," said Dr Terry Percival, Leader of NICTA's Broadband and the Digital Economy Business Team. "As Australia's ICT Research Centre of Excellence, NICTA is developing innovative software to meet the challenges of a dynamic, digital - and increasingly mobile - economy.
"We are delighted to be part of the Unleash Your App competition, fostering excellence in mobile applications development, and supporting and encouraging the next generation of Australian ICT entrepreneurs."
2011 Unleash Your App competition winner
The 2011 first prize winner Zakaria Bouguettaya from the Australian National University has gone on to light up the local app development industry since developing his winning MyBus 2.0 Canberra bus application. As part of the award-winning Imagine Team, Zakaria has jumped from strength to strength, using tips and tricks gained from his Unleash Your App experience to develop apps for the Police Community Youth Club and the Australian National University.
"Developing MyBus 2.0 was a journey for me and the Unleash Your App competition validated that hard work," said Zakaria.
"The competition opened my eyes to the dedication of other Australian developers and we've gone on to work on new and interesting concepts as a result. The 'Meet the Experts' workshop was an invaluable experience as we received vital industry advice to help market and sell our apps."
