OPTUS MAKES AUSTRALIA'S FIRST 3G CALLS
13 December 2001, 09:00 AM
Optus has made Australia's first live 3G (third generation) calls confirming its position as the leader in mobile data innovation in Australia.
Keir Preedy, Acting Managing Director Mobile for Optus, said the 3G calls were made over the last week using Nokia equipment.
"Working with Nokia, we have a fully functioning 3G laboratory in Sydney which gives us the capability to test all the necessary elements for 3G services - including network equipment, handsets and applications," he said.
"While Australians probably won't experience 3G services until mid 2003, we are laying the foundations for the future today," Mr Preedy said.
"Over the next year we will conduct a vigorous program of 3G trials to ensure that Australians get the best access to the best available mobile data services."
Optus and Nokia are currently testing mobile-to-mobile 3G calls, fixed line to mobile 3G calls, network infrastructure and some early prototype handsets.
Optus is already installing 3G network equipment in its base stations across the country and will continue to roll out infrastructure over the next year.
With Optus's launch of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) handsets and services into the retail market last month, Australians are starting to get their first taste of the faster mobile data speeds.
"Our approach to mobile data is to provide consumers with whatever access technology best suits their needs, comfort level and budget from SMS to GPRS and later 3G," Mr Preedy said.
