Cable & Wireless Optus today announced alliances with Computer Science Corporation (CSC), IBM and Nokia that will deliver the next generation of mobile data services for business.

Optus and Nokia have also agreed to launch a data incubator centre, which will develop data business applications specifically for WAP, GPRS and other new mobile technologies.

Paul O'Sullivan, Managing Director Mobile, Cable & Wireless Optus said the alliances would provide solutions allowing the transition of corporate systems to the mobile environment.

"Earlier this year we launched Australia's first operational GPRS network. Now we are building customised solutions so that systems from your corporate email through to your corporate intranet can be readily accessed by a mobile device for convenience and portability.

"The faster data speeds provided by GPRS mean users can use their mobile with a laptop or palm type device to download large packets of information quickly. It will revolutionise the way business people work. For example sales teams can be online while in the field," Mr O'Sullivan said.

Cable & Wireless Optus is about to take delivery of GPRS enabled handsets for commercial use. GPRS business solutions for customers are now being developed.
