NBN with Optus: Availability & General Info

Have a question about Optus and the NBN? Here are some answers to commonly asked questions.

What's the NBN & when can I get it?

What's the NBN?

The National Broadband Network (NBN) is an Australia wide high-speed broadband network that will provide voice and lightning fast internet communication to all Australians, regardless of where they live.

The Australian Government has commissioned NBN Co. to oversee the rollout and wholesaling of the NBN to registered telecommunications providers like Optus.

Optus as your NBN provider is responsible for any queries you may have regarding the installation, billing, fault reporting or disconnection of your NBN service.

Learn more about the NBN here.

When can I get the NBN?

The NBN will take up to ten years to cover all of Australia. Within the next three years, NBN Co. has announced it will commence construction to 3.5 million homes within Australia.

  • Optus NBN coverage maps are available here.
  • Further progress and expected time-frames for your area are available on the NBN website.

How do I get the NBN connected & what's involved?

How do I get the NBN connected?

Call us to find out if you can connect, then choose an Optus NBN plan and purchase online

  • For Residential connections call 1300 652 080
  • For Business connections call 1300 621 973

What's involved in getting the NBN connected?

First, we'll check if the NBN fibre-optic network is connected and available in your area.

If it's not yet available:

We can offer Optus Cable or an Optus ADSL2+ Broadband Connection (where available) as an alternative.

If it's available:

We'll arrange for an NBN Co. technician to prepare the fibre-optic cable for connection, which can take up to 8 hours to complete. Once the fibre connection has been prepared for connection, we'll either send you a self install kit (if eligible) or organise for an Optus technician to complete the connection and get you up and running (this usually takes about 2-4 hours to complete).

We have this pre-installation guide that takes you through all the details, feel free to download a copy, there's heaps of info on what happens and when or who to call when you have a question.

Do I need to be there on the day of installation?

Either yourself or an authorised English speaker aged 18 years or over, will need to be at the premises to allow the technician(s) access and to make decisions on where equipment is to be installed within your property.

Will I receive a modem?

If you don't have a compatible NBN modem then we'll give you a wireless Optus modem/ router so that you can connect to the internet without the need for cables. If you already have an NBN compatible modem, then we'll simply send you a userguide. When everything is up and running - we'll send you a SMS reminder to plug in your modem and connect!

Can I still get the NBN if I rent or live in an apartment?

If you rent...

Yes. You will just need your landlord's permission to install the NBN equipment at your home. If the NBN equipment is already installed you can contact Optus and we will take care of the installation for you.

If you live in an apartment...

Yes. All Australians will benefit from the NBN. If you live in an apartment and you're in an area where the NBN is currently available, you'll also need to check if the body corporate has allowed the building to be connected to the NBN.

  • If they have: Call Optus and we'll arrange to have the NBN installed at your home
  • If they haven't: Ask your body corporate/ owners' corporation about their plans for readying your building for the NBN

Can I get the NBN if I'm already using Optus Broadband?

Yes. If you're an existing Optus Broadband customer and the NBN becomes available in your area, we'll contact you and arrange for your service to be migrated to the NBN with Optus.

Are there any fees/ requirements if I'm migrated?

This will depend on one or two things: the type of Optus Broadband you're using and/or the type of installation you are choosing to get.

  • Self-Install Kit – there are no additional fees
  • Professional Installation with an Optus technician – ADSL may require an additional fee but HFC does not because it's a requirement for us to ensure that everything is set up successfully

Note. Once you're signed up to an NBN plan, you won't be able to change back to your previous ADSL or Cable Broadband service unless you move to an area where the NBN is not yet available.
