How to Unlock Your Mobile Device From The Optus Network

Need to know more about network unlocking? Find what you need here by simply answering a couple of quick questions below.

Network Unlocking differs from unblocking a 'locked out' handset/SIM Card. For more information on that topic, see this article.

Before you proceed

We can only remove a network lock from devices sold by Optus directly and that are locked to our mobile network. If your device is locked to another provider's network then you'll need to contact that service provider and request a network unlock.

Do I need network unlocking?

Network unlocking is only required if you plan to use your Optus sold mobile device with another service provider's mobile network and SIM card. E.g. If you're going overseas.

Is it one of the phones below?

Optus does not network lock handsets originally purchased as part of a Postpaid service over the life of a contract, unless the specific handset type is available for selection below.

My handset manufacturer/type is not shown below

If your handset type/ manufacturer is not listed below, (Nokia, Samsung, Sony, LG, HTC, etc.) then an Optus network unlock request is not required as your phone is not locked to the Optus Network. You can test this by placing another service provider's SIM card in your handset.

My handset was originally purchased from another service provider

If your device was sold by another service provider, we cannot unlock your device as it won't be locked to the Optus Network. You will need to contact the service provider that sold the device to request a network unlock.

Congratulations your iPhone is almost unlocked!

There is just one more thing you need to do!

If you have an iPhone 4 or higher

Update your device to iOS 7 via iTunes. It's that simple. Once the update is complete your iPhone will be unlocked.

If you have an iPhone 3, 3GS or if you don't want to update to iOS 7

Perform a backup and then restore your iPhone with iTunes. This sends the unlocking setting to your iPhone, allowing it to work with another provider's SIM card.  Further help with this step is available via the link below.

I've updated/ restored before, what's different this time?

On 11 September, 2013 we auto-unlocked all iPhones previously sold by us (including the iPhone 5). Performing an update or restore via iTunes, after this date, will make sure that your iPhone has received the new unlocking settings.

If it wasn't listed, then it's not locked.

Well, to the Optus Network anyway!

Remember if your handset was purchased on an Optus Postpaid contract but wasn't listed, then an Optus network unlock request is not required as you're not locked to the Optus Network. You can test this by placing another service provider's active SIM card in your handset. If it works then you're good to go!

It's not working and is asking for an unlock code?

This means it's probably been locked by another provider/ phone company or it was originally sold as a Prepaid handset. A lot of phone companies across the world choose to lock devices they've originally sold. If this is the case then you'll need to contact the service provider that sold the device to request it to be unlocked.

Also, if your device was sold by another service provider that uses our network, we cannot unlock your device. You will need to contact the service provider that originally sold your mobile handset to request network unlocking.

Another suggestion is that you double check that you're following the correct unlock instructions for your device. You can see specific unlocking instructions for a wide range of devices via the link below.
