Basically, it's using mobile internet on your phone, tablet, laptop or other mobile broadband device while you're travelling outside of Australia.

As a heads up, data roaming isn't available in all countries and all data roaming charges are in addition to the included value if you're on a mobile plan.

If you've recently been travelling overseas, you can get an estimate of how much you'll be charged for roaming data.
Simply log in to My Account on the full website, select the service you've been using overseas and click on the 'Service Summary' tab.

You can recharge online with a credit card at www.optus.com.au/recharge or by visiting an Optus store to purchase the recharge vouchers. It's best to get these before you head off overseas.
Just so you know, the data roaming allowance is only for use overseas. Data roaming allowances can be rolled-over to a maximum of 20 GB, provided your recharge hasn't expired.
To activate international roaming for your mobile broadband device simply call:

To use your mobile broadband device to access the internet and send or receive emails while overseas, you must ensure that international (global) roaming is activated. This will let you stay connected with family and friends in selected destinations abroad.
International Data Roaming for Mobile Broadband will activate within 4 hours.
Just remember, you'll need to turn your device off and back on again to update the service access.
Optus customers with a mobile monthly plan can keep a tab on usage in My Account as well as receive SMS usage alerts.
SMS alerts are not available on all business plans. If you are a business customer and want to check if your service will receive usage alerts while roaming, please call 133 343 - within Australia.
If you're a Prepaid customer you can check your balance via your device's dashboard. If you have an older device, simply use your dashboard to SMS the word BAL to 9999.
While roaming using your mobile broadband service, you can access the internet as you normally would through the Optus network.
You can also connect to the internet via Wi-Fi (wireless-free) connections that your computer, tablet and mobile phone can detect, typically found in airports, hotels and some cafes. Most require passwords (provided by the supplier) and some charge a connection fee.
If you don't have a modem you can get a Plan or Prepaid USB or WiFi Modem that can be purchased online or in store. The modems are small enough to slip into your pocket!
