How Roaming On A Plan Works

When you leave Australia your mobile usage is charged at roaming rates. These vary from country to country. To enjoy the convenience of talk, text and data while travelling and have peace of mind, follow these steps.

To check if your roaming is activated, see here. Download the My Optus App so you can easily track your usage and purchase an Optus Travel™ Pack.

Step 2

Either pay as you go with our affordable roaming rates or purchase an Optus Travel™ Pack for travel within Zone 1 countries.

Step 3

Check your roaming usage in the My Optus App or My Account. We will also send you usage alerts for your peace of mind.

Optus Travel™ Packs

Pre-purchase an Optus Travel™ Pack for $10 per day to get unlimited talk and SMS plus 50MB of data to use in Zone 1 countries. Need even more? No sweat. You can buy multiple days and accumulate the total data allowance. For example, buy 5 days and use your 250MB any time over the 5-day period.

To Purchase an Optus Travel Pack:

  • Online via My Account (Just click the 'Options and Extras' tab)
  • On your mobile via the My Optus App (Just select International Roaming from the menu)
  • Call 1300 300 937 (within Australia) or +61 2 8082 5678 (free call from your Optus mobile whilst overseas)

International roaming is active for all new Optus Postpaid mobile phones purchased from 15 September 2013. So, there's no set up!

However, if roaming isn't turned on for your phone, it's best to do so before you leave Australia. To turn roaming on or off simply use any one of these easy ways:

  • Text the number 7 to 9999 and follow the prompts
  • Free Call 1509 within Australia from your Optus mobile and follow the prompts
  • Business customers call 133 343 within Australia
  • On your mobile via the My Optus App
  • Online via My Account, (just click the settings tab for the service on which you want to activate roaming)
  • Personal and business customers free call +61 2 8082 5678, from any other roaming activated Optus mobile while overseas

  • All Optus Travel™ rates are in addition to your mobile plan's included value.
  • Charges apply for both making and receiving calls or MMS.
  • You only pay for text messages you send; receiving messages is free.

We send you SMS alerts for every estimated $100 spent on roaming usage. If you purchase an Optus Travel™ Pack you will receive usage alerts via SMS at 50%, 85% and 100% of your usage.

For business customers: usage alerts do not apply to all Business Plans. To check if your service will receive usage alerts while roaming, please call 133 343 within Australia.

You can also track your usage by checking in My Account or the My Optus App.

Please keep in mind that usage alerts are not generated in real-time and delays of up to 48 hours may be experienced.

Yes, to get your VoiceMail messages, dial +61 4 11 000 321 and follow the prompts. It will cost the standard call rate for the country that you are in to retrieve your VoiceMail. You will need your account PIN to access your VoiceMail while roaming, so make sure you have it handy.

If you have any incoming calls diverted to VoiceMail (on busy or no reply), you may be charged the normal call rate to receive the call and again to divert that call to your VoiceMail box in Australia. It's $1 per minute if you are in Zone 1 or $2 per minute if you are in Zone 2. See Zone 1 and 2 countries here

To avoid additional roaming charges, we recommend that you disable Call Waiting and set up Call Forwarding of all incoming calls to VoiceMail, before you leave Australia .

  • If you want to avoid receiving any incoming calls you can set an "unconditional" diversion (divert all incoming calls), to VoiceMail so that your phone does not receive any calls while travelling overseas. To set up an unconditional diversion dial **21*0411000321#, before you leave Australia. To cancel this when you return, dial ##002#. To set back to VoiceMail dial **004*0411000321#. (These commands will not work when you are roaming overseas).
  • To turn off Call Waiting, dial #43#. To enable it again when you return, dial *43*11#.
  • Turn off VoiceMail by dialling 1509 before you leave Australia, and follow the prompts or alternatively use the My Optus app.
  • Please note that if you disable Call Waiting and set up Call Forwarding in this way, you will not be able to receive calls, and any incoming calls will be automatically diverted to VoiceMail. Standard charges will be incurred to access/listen to your VoiceMail.

If you'd like to keep your VoiceMail but not divert calls to it whilst you are overseas, dial ##002#, before you leave home, and then dial **004*0411000321# when you return to start diverting calls to VoiceMail again.

Yes, 4G roaming is available in selected countries depending on your device compatibility and the foreign carrier's 4G coverage.

4G network frequencies vary from country to country and may include the following: 700MHz, 800MHz, 850MHz, 900MHz, 1700MHz, 1900MHz, 2100MHz, 2300MHz, 2600MHz

If you purchase one of our $120 My Plan Plus/My Plan Business plans, you get up to 10 days of Optus Travel™ Pack to use each billing month in Zone 1 countries. You will need to ensure that you activate your Optus Travel™ Packs prior to use. Any data provided as part of an Optus Travel™ Pack is not shareable and will not form part of any Data Pool. Any un-used credit days of Optus Travel™ Pack are forfeited and cannot be rolled over to the next billing month.

No, data free Mobile TV and music streaming is only for use in Australia. You’ll be charged roaming rates for data used if you stream Netflix or Presto while you’re overseas and for data used with any music apps when overseas.

Optus Travel™: Roaming charges are excluded from your plan's included value. GPRS/data roaming and MMS are also excluded from all mobile data packs (unless otherwise specified). The countries and services where Optus Travel™ is available may vary from time to time. Rates may change fairly frequently due to international exchange rates and what we are charged by overseas providers. We'll try to keep you informed of current rates on our website. Optus makes no guarantee regarding the quality and availability of coverage or any roaming services. Video Telephony is charged at $1.50 per minute. MMS is charged at the standard MMS rate for your plan + the standard data roaming rate for the country you are in. GST does not apply to roaming charges (except MMS).

Optus Travel™ Pack: Only for use within Zone 1 countries. Data is charged in 10KB increments. If you exceed the data limit, standard data roaming rates for the country you are in will apply. Unlimited calls can be used for standard national and international calls and SMS only. MMS, premium numbers, Video Telephony, aerospace and maritime calls and calls to and from satellite phones are not included.

My Optus App: Available on most Android mobile phones using Android 2.3.3 or later. Is currently not available on devices using the Windows operating system. You need an Optus personal or small business mobile account to use the My Optus app. It doesn't currently support small business accounts with large fleet plans. Data Usage: The app is free to download and use for Optus mobile customers. Download and use of app requires data usage. If you're roaming, all data used will be charged at the applicable roaming rate.

My Account: Data roaming charges will apply if accessing from your phone when roaming.

Usage Alerts: Are not generated in real-time and delays of up to 48 hours may be experienced. You should not rely solely on the alert service to monitor your usage.
