Star Wars 8: Everything You Need to Know About The Last Jedi

The latest trailer for The Last Jedi revealed all sorts of juicy details about the upcoming Rian Johnson directed film. In this article we break down the key moments in the trailer, and look at what we might already know before the film premiers on December 15th.

Spoiler Alert!

We’ll be drawing from the latest trailer as well as The Force Awakens and last year’s Rogue One film. Putting this all together means plenty of potential spoilers ahead, so if you’re not all caught up, now might be the time to look away.

The Trailer is Misleading Us

It wouldn’t be a Star Wars Trailer if there wasn’t a little bit of misdirection. Right from the get-go it looks like there’s folly afoot. At the start of the new trailer Snoke’s voiceover says:

“When I found you, I saw raw, untamed power.”

Accompanied by shots of Kylo. He must be talking about Kylo, right?

Dedicated fans have used the power of Taiwanese subtitles on the trailer to uncover that Snoke is actually referring to a woman. Which means he’s probably talking about Rey.

Mind blown?

Kylo Won’t Blow Up Leia’s Ship

We know Kylo’s a bad dude. He killed his Dad already and in the trailer it looks like Kylo is going to blow up his Mum’s ship. However, we don’t think that is how it ends for General Leia.

Actress Carrie Fisher sadly passed away this year, so this might be the last time we see her in a Star Wars movie. Still, there’s plenty to suggest that Kylo won’t be the one closing out the Leia story line. After all, we see Leia later in the trailer wearing some pretty stylish snow getup, and director Rian Johnson has confirmed that the The Last Jedi wasn’t going to be the character’s final appearance. And then there’s the power of CGI and what it did for Leia in Rogue One.

Rey and Kylo Aren’t Teaming Up… At Least Not Yet

The other big misdirect happens towards the end of the latest trailer. We see Rey telling someone off camera that she needs someone to ‘show me my place in all this’.

And then it cuts to Kylo extending his hand.

At first glance it certainly looks like they are talking to each other; the light coming in from Rey’s right / Kylo’s left is kind of consistent. But there’s a couple of clues here that make us think this is actually two separate scenes:

  • Rey looks to be in a cave and wearing the same outfit as when she trains with Luke on.

  • There’s fire and destruction behind Kylo.

Nice try, Disney. You almost had us!

Also, did if you’re in the UK you’ll have a chance to see the film before the rest of us…

There’s some rather good news for UK fans of the galaxy far, far away, as Disney and Lucasfilm have announced today that Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the hugely-anticipated second chapter of the Sequel Trilogy, is set to open on these shores a day earlier than previously announced, with the film hitting on Thursday, December 14th. The news shouldn’t be too much of a surprise given that both Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opened a day earlier on this side of the Pond. Certainly a far cry from the eight month wait that UK fans had for the original Star Wars, and the two month wait for Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. #exclusive #news #thelastjedi #starwars

Rey will Showdown with Snoke

Rey defeated Kylo in The Force Awakens and that’s got Supreme Leader Snoke’s attention. After all, we know Snoke took an interest in Kylo because he had training as a Jedi. He seems to be on a mission to find the most powerful force user in the galaxy.

The trailer gives us a few clues that Rey and Snoke will have a show down, the clearest happening when we see Rey suspended in the air, anguished, a gold robed figure in the background.

This ‘force freeze’ seems a more powerful version of the one Kylo uses to halt people, lasers, just about anything in the Force Awakens. As Kylo’s ‘master’ this is almost definitely Snoke in the background.

Rey and Luke Probably Won’t Get Along Like We Hope They Will

There’s plenty of evidence that points to a bit of a rift between Luke and Rey.

We know Luke’s living like a hermit on a rocky island. He’s checked out of the whole Intergalactic-battle-between-good-and-evil-thing

“Luke felt responsible. He just walked away from everything” – Han Solo, The Force Awakens

If Yoda taught us anything, hermits aren’t fond of visitors. Luke’s not keen on teaching anyone anything. There’s also a little bit of a clue in the latest trailer. We see Rey practicing the force, and Luke remarks :

“I’ve seen this raw strength only once before. It didn’t scare me enough then. It does now.”

Finn Goes Undercover

The trailer shows Finn in a First Order Officer uniform. Originally a storm trooper, Finn betrayed the bad guys early in The Force Awakens after witnessing their cruelty.

Does Finn go back the dark side? Probably not.

As we see in the trailer, he has a one on one duel with Captain Phasma, and there’s also a toy version of Finn in the First Officer uniform that pretty much confirms he’ll be doing a bit of undercover work for the Resistance.

You’re not fooling us, Finn.

Where’s Poe?

Ossac Issac’s Poe Dameron in the trailer, but we don’t see too much of him or what he’ll actually be doing. We know that Finn will be mostly adventuring with a new character played by Kelly Marie Tran. So what’s Poe up to? Here’s hoping he does a little more than disappear for half the movie like he did in The Force Awakens.

December Can’t Come Fast Enough

While the trailer might have us talking in circles about what’s actually going to happen in The Last Jedi, there’s still plenty of questions that remain unanswered. Who is Snoke? Where are Rey’s parents? And is Boba Fett really alive ? Only time will tell.

The Last Jedi premiers in cinemas across Australia on 15 December. Check out the gallery below for more pics of the Last Jedi.
