Samsung Galaxy Android Froyo 2.2 Update

Updating your Samsung Galaxy S II operating software to Android 4.1.2

Your mobile is capable of doing amazing things! And the Android team (the guys and girls that work on the software program that runs it) are always looking at ways to make it run better and also add new stuff that makes your experience better.

That’s why we’ve been in touch. There’s a new Android software update available and it’s worth checking out. So if you’re curious to find out more, here are the details to get you up to speed. While it sounds fancy – we’re here for you so hopefully after reading this you’ll be up to speed.

Whoa... let’s start at the beginning. What’s Android anyway?

Android is the operating system (the computer program) that runs your mobile. It makes sure your phone can make calls on the network, run your favourite apps and thousands of other things. It’s created by Google, and it’s in lots of mobiles including your Samsung Galaxy S II!

Ok, so what about Android 4.1.2, tell me about that!

Android 4.1.2 is the latest version of the Android operating software. Each version has a nickname – and this one is called 'Jelly Bean’.

If you bought a Samsung Galaxy S II from us here at Optus, then your mobile is currently running Android 2.3 (if you were wondering, its nickname is Gingerbread). That was totally awesome back then, but now it’s time to update to Android 4.1.2.

Yeah, but why should I update my Samsung Galaxy S II to Android 4.1.2?

There are some great improvements to be had. Upgrading your phone to Android 4.1.2 will help your mobile run smoother and more importantly you’ll get better, more reliable data connections on the mobile network. That’s what we’re really excited about for you!

Along with that it also adds some exciting new features like:

  • Improved camera features that mean you can take more awesome pictures;
  • Access to Google Now, an Intelligent Personal Assistant developed by Google. So good it knows what information you need before you even ask.

And these great additions too:

  • 'Direct Call' - when messaging someone and you decide to call them instead, simply lift the phone up to your ear and Direct Call will call them for you.
  • 'Smart Stay” – recognises when you are looking at the phone and keeps a bright display for continued viewing and  keeps a bright display for continued viewing.
  • 'Pop Up Play” – helps you multitask such as watching a video and sending an sms simultaneously.

What if I do not update my phone?

We haven’t been able to tempt you yet? No probs. Your mobile will continue working as it currently is, but you won’t be able to enjoy the new features.

How do I install the Android 4.1.2 update?

There are two methods. But before you do, please make sure you backup all your contacts, music and other personal stuff before performing the update. You don’t want to lose this stuff hey?

1) Using Samsung Kies over the PC - Kies makes it easy to manage your mobile’s stuff and also do things like updating its operating software.

2) Using the over the air installer - find it under settings-> about -> update.
For this option we recommend that you connect over WiFi instead. If decide to download using mobile internet, data charges might apply. Check your plan to see how much data you get and what the charges might be.
