Optus challenges international calling card market
01 Aug 2005

Optus today announced it would slash fixed line international rates to its Top 10 calling destinations 24 hours a day, dropping prices by 68 per cent from 9c to 2.9c per minute┬╣.

In addition, fixed line international rates will be cut by up to 90 per cent to 9c per minute for calls to Germany, Indonesia, Japan, South Africa and Thailand.

Under Optus' bold new fixed line "Callsaver Plus" plan customers can speak for an hour to any of the Optus Top 10 destinations for $2.09 or any of the next five destinations for $5.75.

Optus' Top 10 calling destinations are the UK, USA, Canada, Italy, Greece, New Zealand, Ireland, Hong Kong, China and Singapore.

The new "CallSaver Plus" means Optus' fixed line international rates are comparable to calling cards and VoIP charged call rates, and gives customers the benefit of being able to pick up the phone and dial direct from their own home.

"Until recently, low international calling rates were associated with calling cards or, more recently, VoIP offerings," Michael Smith, Group Marketing Director, Optus Consumer, said.

"Last year Optus shook up the market with the introduction of its original 9c "CallSaver" plan and we are now going a step further.

"Customers no longer have to experience the inconvenience of purchasing a calling card, worrying about congestion at peak periods or paying up front and potentially wasting unused call minutes. Instead, they can enjoy competitive low rates and superior voice quality at all times by simply picking up their home phone and dialling.

"Optus is once again breaking new ground in the telecommunications market. The "CallSaver Plus" plan follows the launch of Optus' $39 HomeCap plan in April - the first capped long distance plan in Australia to include all national calls, calls to any mobile and calls to all overseas countries from the home phone at all times," Mr Smith said.

Existing Optus customers should call Optus Customer Service on 13 3937 to change their plan and receive the benefits of the reduced rates. To sign up, new customers should call 1800 501 064.
