Optus improves coverage in Shepparton region
28 Aug 2003

Optus is providing improved mobile phone coverage in Shepparton and south of the city along the Goulburn Valley Highway, following significant investment in the immediate area and surrounding district.

Rob Parcell, Director Victoria, said Optus was committed to improving coverage and providing competition in the central north of the state over the next few months.

"Shepparton is the biggest town along the Goulburn Valley Highway and an important regional business centre.

"Optus' investment in Shepparton and the surrounding region will mean that the people of the central north and visitors to the area will have better mobile phone coverage and a choice of network.

"In addition to the recent improvements in Shepparton, over the next few months Optus will build an additional 14 base station sites to maximise the GSM footprint in the region, Mr Parcell said.

Sites now active in the immediate Shepparton area include:

  • Kialla West, providing enhanced coverage along the Goulburn Valley Highway towards Murchinson;
  • Nagambie, providing further improvement to the Goulburn Valley Highway south of Murchinson towards Hughes Creek;
  • Central Shepparton, Finley, Jerilderie and Tocumwal; and
  • Strathmerton, providing coverage along the Goulburn Valley and Murray Valley Highways linking coverage to sites in Cobram, Tocumwal, Nathalia and Nurmurkah.

To further complement the coverage, sites will be built in Stanhope and Rushworth.

John Balaburov, owner of Optus World Shepparton, said the coverage along the highway would be welcomed.

"The Goulburn Valley Highway is the link to the 'fruit bowl' of the central north and it is important the people who travel the route can now receive improved mobile coverage.

"Optus coverage isn't only about where you can use your mobile, but also the quality of the calls you make. People can maximise their mobile coverage by installing a car kit with an external antenna.

"Optus' investment in the region ensures there is healthy competition which is good news for consumers," Mr Balaburov said.

The additional sites planned for the area will be built by the end of the year.
