Optus currently operates 4 separate Mobile Networks in Australia and so it’s important you choose the Network right for you and your purposes.

  1. Optus dual band network - 96% population coverage
  2. Optus 3G single band network - 80% population coverage
  3. Optus 2G Network - 96% population coverage
  4. Optus Thuraya Satellite Network - 100% population coverage

Optus Dual Band (2100MHz/900MHz)

For the past 18 months, Optus have been building more than 3 base stations every day to provide Australia with an alternative National 3G Mobile Network. The Optus dual band national network now provides Australians with access to competitively priced 3G services delivered over a high quality, mobile network.

How to access the dual band Network coverage
To access the wider coverage provided by the 'yes'G (2100MHz/900MHz) Network, Optus customers will need to use a 'yes'G 2100MHz/900MHz dual band device and can now select from a range of great dual band mobile phones and wireless broadband modems.

For more information on 'yes'G Network compatible devices see personal mobile and business mobile or personal wireless broadband and business wireless broadband.

Optus 3G Network (Single Band 2100MHz)

This Network is great for people who want to do more than just make & receive calls and sms messages. The Optus 3G Network also allows users to do things such as video calls, wireless broadband, internet browsing, send picture messages and video streaming. The Optus 3G network covers 80% of the Australian population, making it ideal for users who live in major metropolitan areas of Australia.

When outside the 3G coverage areas, users can still access the Optus 2G Network to send and receive voice and sms messages.

To access the 3G Network you will need a 3G Network compatible device – see available personal mobile and business mobile or personal wireless broadband and business wireless broadband.

Optus 2G Network

This Network is great for people who just want to be able to make and receive calls and sms messages. The Optus 2G network covers 96% of the Australian population, making it ideal for users who live or travel to regional areas of Australia.

Optus Thuraya Service

The Optus Thuraya Service provides access to the Optus GSM Digital Mobile Network and in the case of satellite, the Thuraya Satellite Network. The Optus 2G network covers 96% of the Australian population, making it ideal for users who live or travel to regional areas of Australia. When outside of the Optus 2G network, switch to satellite mode and make and receive calls across Australia on Thuraya’s Satellite network when you have clear line of sight to a Thuraya satellite.

Wireless Broadband - on the move

As Optus continues to roll out speed upgrades across the Optus dual band network, customers with devices capable of higher speed specifications will get the best out of their Optus service when they are out and about.

1. 7.2Mbps (HSDPA) and 2Mbps (HSUPA) are theoretical maximums. Average downlink speed between 512Kbps and 3.0Mbps and uplink speed between 512Kbps – 1.2Mbps and both are available in selected locations only. Other locations within the Optus 3G and Dual Band coverage area provide average downlink speeds of between 512Kbps and 1.5 Mbps.
