Missed Call Service

Get messages easily.

Good news - from 23 January 2017 we've upgraded our Missed Call Service. We now send you a multimedia message (MMS) with an audio recording of your caller's voice message. If you currently have Missed Call Service switched on, this service has been upgraded for you automatically where you have a compatible plan and handset.

MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service. Using a compatible phone, you can send/receive photos, videos and sounds, animations and text just as you would a text message (SMS).

Important: If you're currently using a handset that does not support MMS or if you've asked us to turn off MMS, you'll have to opt-in to VoiceMail (charges may apply).

  • To do this, on your phone's calling app, dial **004*0411000321# and press the call button.
  • To opt-out of VoiceMail and Missed Call Service completely, dial ##002# and press the call button. If you do this, your missed callers won't be able to leave any messages.
  • Hearing impaired users: Contact us via the Teletypewriter (TTY) Service (1800 123 124) or the National Relay Service (133 677) to discuss options.

Our new Missed Call Service will still work when you:

  • Are out of a coverage area
  • Have your phone switched off
  • Are busy on another call
  • Are just screening someone

Your caller can leave a short message and you'll receive the recording in an MMS when you are back within a coverage area or your phone is switched back on.

Read the FAQs for more information about using the service.

Important things to know

  • The callers who ring you will be charged their normal rates for mobile voice calls.
  • If you call Optus mobile customer service to request Missed Call Service to be switched on or off, you will be charged the normal rates for a call to a 1300 number.

Support FAQs

Using your mobile in Australia: no extra charges apply for using Missed Call Service.

Using your mobile overseas: charges apply for using Missed Call Service. The rates differ depending on the country you're in. If your callers are diverted to Missed Call Service and prompted to leave a message, you will be charged the normal call rate to receive the call while overseas and again to divert that call to the Missed Call Service box in Australia.

If you choose to return calls as a result of being notified of the missed calls from the Missed Call Service, roaming call charges will apply.

In addition, standard roaming data charges will apply for downloading the MMS (max message size is 400 kilobytes). See our roaming tool for standard Autoroam charges.

To avoid these extra charges, you can turn Missed Call Service off completely and your phone's call waiting feature before you go overseas.

You can use the new Missed Call Service, if you are:

  • Using an MMS compatible device (handsets released from 2002+ have MMS capability) AND
  • Currently able to send/receive MMS messages (e.g. picture messages) on your phone.

If you opt in to Missed Call Service and both criteria above are not satisfied, you will not be able to receive or retrieve messages left by callers. We will not able to re-send messages.

If your service is compatible (as stated above) and you currently use or have already opted in to use the service, then you don't have to do anything to use the new Missed Call Service. We have automatically switched you over and you'll start receiving missed call voice messages in a handy audio file.

Turn it ON Turn it OFF and switch back to voicemail

Call 159 and follow the prompts or SMS ON to 159

THEN

Dial ** 004 * 0411000160 # on your phone's main calling app and press the Call button.

Dial ** 004 * 0411000321 # on your phone's main calling app and press the Call button.

To turn both Missed Call Service and Voicemail off completely, dial ##002# and press the Call button.

Audio recordings sent to you via MMS through the Missed Call Service are saved on your phone – just like any MMS picture message. For a 1 minute message, the message size is about 92 kilobytes.

If you accidentally delete an audio recording, or you do not receive the MMS voice message (e.g. you've asked us to switch off MMS functionality on your service or you have an incompatible device), we will not able to re-send messages.

You also won't be able to retrieve messages by calling VoiceMail (321).
