Optus Wireless IP VPN

Secure mobile connectivity to your company's private IP data network.

With mobility comes the challenge of keeping everyone connected, regardless of the device they use, their access method, the task they need to perform or where they are doing it from. Optus Wireless Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (Wireless IP VPN or also known as WIP VPN) extends the business boundaries away from the office by enabling your mobile workforce or remote machine-to-machine assets to securely connect to your company's private IP data network.

It provides a secure, reliable network connection between your company's private IP data network and your Optus mobile connected fleet helping to provide a greater level of control to help keep your business running safely while helping to reduce your management costs.

Optus Wireless IP VPN provides secure connectivity from a mobile device to your private IP data network through the Optus mobile network. As an IP based mobile data service, Optus Wireless IP VPN can be deployed to deliver either remote connectivity for your workforce or remote machine-to machine business solutions.

FEATURES

Optus Wireless IP VPN now with Optus 4G Plus network* access is offered as a highly configurable solution than can be tailored to your company's specific network and security requirements with numerous configuration options available.

Network Connectivity

Two Network Connectivity options are available depending on your current private IP data network implementation:

  1. Secure mobile connectivity tunnelled via an encrypted IPSec connection across the public internet to your company's private IP data network, offering a comparatively cost effective solution for the delivery of low value information and/or access to business applications.

  2. Secure mobile connectivity directly into your company's private Optus Evolve IP VPN network, offering a premium solution for the delivery of high value information and/or access to business critical applications. An existing or newly created Optus Evolve IP VPN network connection is required for this option to be available for mobile connections.

IP Addressing

Two IP Address assignment options are available depending on your business needs:

  1. Dynamic: Network Assigned IP Address in which Wireless end devices are assigned IP Addresses from a range dynamically by the network (i.e. a device will get a different IP Address each connection).

  2. Static: RADIUS Assigned IP Address in which Wireless end devices are assigned IP Addresses statically from the chosen RADIUS Server (i.e. a device will get the same IP Address each connection)

End User Authentication

Three End User Authentication options are available depending on your requirements:

  1. None: End user authentication is not required, this option is limited to the Dynamically Assigned IP Addressing option.

  2. Optus Provided RADIUS: End users are authenticated via a self managed Optus provided RADIUS solution.

  3. Customer Provided RADIUS: End users are authenticated via your own company RADIUS Server. This option also provides support for LAN Subnet / Frame Routing which allows devices behind wireless routers to be accessible from the corporate private data network.

Compatibility - Works with most data-capable mobile devices in the market.

Reliability - Uses the Optus 4G Plus, 3G and GPRS mobile networks* to deliver reliable access to your company private IP data network wherever there is Optus mobile network coverage.

*The Optus 4G Plus network is available in selected areas with a compatible device and plan. Check coverage at optus.com.au/coverage.

TECHNICAL OVERVIEW

Optus Wireless IP VPN provides dedicated access, over the Optus 4G Plus, 3G and GPRS mobile networks*, from the end user's mobile devices to your company's private IP data network.

As the data traffic is carried over a secured private IP VPN network, the data is secured end to end. The service is configured so users are restricted to using the service for business relevant corporate applications and backed by business grade performance objectives, reporting, service support and features.

SPECIFICATIONS

You have the flexibility of two solution options: remote devices are either tunnelled securely over the Internet (IPSec) or connected directly into your Optus Evolve IP VPN network.

Mobile Device Support

A range of Optus Wireless IP VPN compatible devices are available to suit your business requirements:

  • USB Modems (for Windows and Mac OS)
  • Mobile Wi-Fi (for Windows and Mac OS) supports Internet access for more than one PC Wireless Routers (for Windows and Mac OS) supports Internet access for more than one PC.
  • A range of Optus mobile network compatible customer supplied machine-to-machine modems.
  • Compatible mobile enabled Smartphone's and Tablets.

Network Connectivity Options

  1. Encrypted IPSec: This option allows end user mobiles to securely connect to your company's private IP data network via an encrypted IPSec tunnel across the public internet to your company's private IP data network. The following IPSec configuration options are supported:

    1. IPSec with Tunnel Protection

    2. IPSec with Crypto Map

    3. GRE over IPSec

  2. Evolve IP VPN PVC: Secure mobile connectivity directly into your company's private Optus Evolve IP VPN network via a dedicated Private Virtual Circuit (PVC). An existing or newly created Optus Evolve IP VPN Network connection is required for this option to be available for mobile connections.

IP Addressing Options

  1. Dynamic IP addresses also known as Network Assigned IP Addresses, assigns mobile end devices IP Address from a chosen IP pool dynamically by the network. This allows for a greater number of end devices to potentially connect to a small IP address pool (however, only a limited number of devices will be able to connect at any point in time), it also simplifies the initial end device setup as there is no need to statically assign an IP address to each user.

  2. Static IP addressing also known as Radius Assigned IP Addresses, assigns wireless end devices IP Addresses statically from a chosen RADIUS Server (i.e. a device will get the same IP Address each connection). This enables customers to identify end devices via its assigned IP address to help simplify the development of wireless applications providing the ability to perform network and server initiated connections to end devices.

End User Authentication Options

  1. None: End user authentication is not required, this option is limited to the dynamically assigned IP addressing option only.

  2. Optus Provided RADIUS (CMI): End users are authenticated via a self-managed Optus provided web portal the Customer Management Interface (CMI) RADIUS solution.

  3. Customer Provided RADIUS: End users are authenticated via your own company's RADIUS Server. This option also provides support for LAN Subnet / Frame Routing which allows devices behind wireless routers to be accessible from the corporate private IP data network.

Product FAQs

No, there is no need for a new or special SIM card as long as the service associated with the SIM card has the correct rate plan and provisioning to allow it to connect to your specific Optus Business Mobile Broadband or Optus Wireless IP VPN solution. In most cases for new service activation a new SIM card will be supplied by Optus with the required provisioning.

No, this allows you to access the best possible mobile network speeds supported by your mobile device and are available in your area; we do not throttle the speeds once plan limits are reached. However, Optus does charge for excess usage.

All current Optus Mobile 4G devices fall back to work on the Optus GPRS or 3G mobile network if, for any reason, the 4G Plus network is unavailable.

Data carried over the GPRS, 3G or 4G Plus mobile networks is charged at the same rate.

The device will indicate if 4G is being used via the display of the 4G network symbol.

Most data application will benefit from the greater data speeds and lower latency offered by the Optus 4G Plus network*. For example, a user can download corporate data more quickly than on GPRS or 3G mobile networks.

Check the handset or device user guide, or check the manufacturer's website, looking up the model number.

Essentially, a new data layer is added to the 3G Network to enable it to carry data at higher speeds - also known as 3.5G. HSDPA is an enhancement to our existing 3G Mobile Network.
