Technical overview

Optus Data Roaming lets you use your GPRS, 3G and mobile broadband# data services you have activated in Australia on selected overseas mobile networks with which Optus has roaming partnerships*. When you arrive, your phone will automatically view available networks so all you need to do is connect via your handset. You should not have to change your phone data settings.

Different countries and carriers will support different data speeds. Whether you need GRPS roaming only, or 3G, or 3G Broadband, depends on what mobile data service you use^:

  • Mobile email (eg BlackBerry®; Microsoft® DirectPush): GPRS, 3G or 3G Broadband.
  • Optus Mobile Broadband: Minimum 3G, better performance with 3G Broadband
  • MMS: Needs GPRS.

Please use our Global Roaming tool on the left to check the list of services in your destination and to find out which is the best carrier to connect to when you arrive. If your mobile phone hasn't automatically connected you to one of these networks, you'll need to select the network manually by following the instructions in your mobile's user guide.

Support FAQs

How do I activate Data Roaming on my phone?

Optus AutoRoam™ is not automatically activated on monthly-billed Mobile Plan accounts. However, you may have been sent an SMS from Optus notifying you that roaming has been enabled on your account. If you have not been notified or are not sure whether roaming is activated on your account, please call Optus Customer Care on 1300 133 334 during business hours before you leave Australia.

Remember that not all mobile phones will work on all overseas networks so for some countries you may need to rent a handset. For countries where AutoRoam is not available, a different mobile number can be used.

How do I make sure I'm connected to the right network at my destination?

First, use our Global Roaming tool on the left to check which services are available at your destination and pick the network which best suits your needs.

All you need to do is make sure that you connect to that network when you are roaming.

However, the network that your phone automatically connects to when you arrive may not always be the one that you want. In this case, you will need to change the network manually on your handset by following a few steps outlined below. The steps to manually select a network may vary from phone to phone and on some devices may not be accessible (please check your handset user guide).

Typically, go through the following steps:

  • Step 1: Go to ‘Main Menu’
  • Step 2: Select ‘Settings’
  • Step 3: Select ‘Network’ or ‘Connectivity’
  • Step 4: Select ‘Operator selection’ or ‘Search Mode’
  • Step 5: Select ‘Manual’ , and your phone will search for mobile networks available in your location
  • Step 6: Select the network you want.

To change back to automatic network selection, repeat Step 1 to 4 and then for Step 5, select ‘Automatic’ and your phone will revert to selecting an available network automatically.
