What is High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA)?

Essentially, a new data layer is added to the 3G Network to enable it to carry data at higher speeds - also known as 3.5G. HSDPA is an enhancement to our existing 3G Mobile Network.

What happens if HSDPA is not available?

All the Optus Mobile Broadband devices can work on the GSM (GPRS) network if, for any reason, the 3G network is unavailable.

Data carried over the GSM network is charged at the same rate.

How can I tell that the device is getting HSDPA speeds?

The device will indicate if HSDPA is being used. If the device is idle it will indicate that the 2G or 3G/HSDPA network is present.

How much does HSDPA cost compared with 3G?

There are no additional fees for data usage on HSDPA. The cost of data usage is the same across GPRS, 3G and HSDPA networks. Although with HSDPA, end users are able to download faster than GPRS and 3G.

What are the benefits of HSDPA?

Almost any data application will benefit from the greater speeds offered by HSDPA. For example, a user can download web pages more quickly than on GPRS or 3G.

What devices can I use to access HSDPA?

Data cards, wireless routers and USB modems for laptops and PCs. Customers can also use their HSDPA handsets as tethered modems or for browsing Internet content at greater speeds.

Will a new SIM card be required to use HSDPA?

If you use a mobile phone for HSDPA access, your existing Optus SIM will work. If you get an Optus Mobile Broadband modem or router, you will be provided with a new, separate data SIM card for that device.

Can I make voice calls with the wireless router?

If voice and data are both active on the SIM in the wireless router the GlobeSurfer III will make and receive voice calls. Mobile call rates apply.

How do I tell if my handset or mobile device is HSDPA compatible?
