Product FAQs

Why backup/restore?

All companies need to backup and retain copies of their production data, whether it is to protect from accidental deletion or corruption, to satisfy regulatory requirements, or as part of a disaster recovery strategy.

While most organisations have some sort of backup strategy in place, the majority do not have confidence in their ability to reliably recover from backups in the event of a crisis.

Optus EXPAN Managed Storage Backup/Restore provides peace of mind that the data is reliably protected. Backup images are retained on-line for immediate recovery and can be optionally stored in an off-site vault for long-term storage or archival.

What are Tier 1 and Tier 2 storage?

Tier 1 storage (used for our On-demand Premium service) uses high speed native fibre channel drives combined with read/write caching suitable for all production storage requirements where performance and availability are important. i.e. database systems, application environments, real-time data requirements

Tier 2 storage (used in our On-demand Lite service) uses lower cost SATA drives suitable for storing large amounts of less frequently accessed data where performance and availability is less important, such as file and email archiving.

What does 'managed' mean for managed storage?

'Managed' means providing an end-to-end service according to stringent service levels and availability guarantees.

This includes:

  • 24 x 7 monitoring, systems administration and operations
  • 24 x 7 helpdesk with Level 2 and 3 technical support
  • Proactive performance management and reporting
  • Regular reports assist with capacity planning
  • Access to storage industry experts to assist with planning and deployment

Why disk on demand?

Reliable data storage it a fundamental requirement of every IT environment. While storage capacity itself is becoming less expensive the cost of the supporting infrastructure, software and management will usually represent the largest cost in a storage solution.

Companies will often estimate and procure in advance then find that they never use it all, need more than they have, or find that it is deployed in the wrong place.

Disk-on-Demand requires no up front capital investment and is billed monthly based on the actual storage used. Additional storage capacity can be allocated as each application or project demands it.

Support FAQs

Can I backup to disk?

Yes, both disk and tape technologies are available for backup. We will assist in qualifying which option would meet your needs best.

Disk-on-Demand customers can also create backup copies of their data with a point-in-time snapshot of SAN based data as an additional level of redundancy and protection.

Can I back up non-SAN data?

Yes - the Backup/Restore service is independent of Disk-on-Demand and will backup any data within your environment, including internal and direct attach storage.

How do I restore data?

You initiate you own data restore requests using the provided user interface or alternatively they may request that Optus perform the restore.

For data that is to be recovered from tapes stored in the off-site Vault, Optus will identify and retrieve the necessary tapes.

Can I eliminate the backup window on production systems?

Yes - this is an option with Disk-on-Demand for large and/or particularly busy systems that cannot afford to run a conventional backup.

Using technology within the SAN an instant copy of the data can be created without impacting the production application. This second image is then used to backup to tape for off-site storage, and also provides an option for direct recovery if required.

Can I run a 'hot' database backup?

Yes - If you have databases or applications that must be on-line 24 x 7, Optus provides a special backup agent that enables a 'hot' backup of that system while maintaining database integrity.

Agents are available for most databases, including SQL, Oracle®, Microsoft Exchange®, Informix®, Sybase®, Lotus® Notes, and SharePoint®.
