Choice of handsets - There are two compact, powerful handsets to choose from: Thuraya SG-2520, which works on satellite and Optus mobile GSM network, and the Thuraya SO-2510 which is satellite only. Both support satellite voice, SMS, and data services, and have in-built GPS. They are simple to use and similar to a standard mobile phone.

To make and receive calls, the satellite phone antenna needs a direct 'line of sight' to a Thuraya satellite. Obstructions such as buildings, heavy tree coverage, bridges, overpasses, carports, garages may restrict the signal. Generally, the Optus Thuraya Mobile Satellite Service cannot be used indoors without connection to an approved indoor repeater or externally mounted antenna. However, within Optus Mobile coverage areas, the dual mode SG2520 handset can be switched to GSM mode for indoor use.

Can I use MMS, GPRS and other Optus Mobile services with the Optus Thuraya Satellite Service?
Although there are some minor differences in features between the Optus Thuraya Satellite Service and a standard Optus Mobile service, most voice and data services will be the same. Click on the technical tab to see a table of differences.
Will the dual mode satellite / GSM device switch calls automatically between Satellite and GSM mode?
No. The SG-2520 has the ability to operate on Tri-band GSM or Satellite depending on the preference settings on the phone. There is no inter-roaming between Satellite and GSM so you will need to decide which network to use and change settings accordingly.
Do the Optus Thuraya Satellite handsets work indoors while in Satellite mode?
No. The device needs direct line of sight to the Thuraya satellite. Obstructions such as buildings, heavy tree coverage, bridges, overpasses, carports, garages may restrict the signal.
Can the Optus Thuraya Satellite handsets be used while roaming overseas?
Yes. If using a Dual Mode device, roaming is available as per normal for GSM. If in Satellite mode, access is available anywhere within the international Thuraya coverage area provided there is a direct line of sight to the Thuraya satellite.
Can the Optus Thuraya Satellite plans be selected for part of the fleet?
