Australia has a proud history in team tennis and developing elite junior travelling teams is a stepping stone to future Davis and Fed Cup representation.
As tennis is usually an individual sport, team tennis in junior competition gives players the opportunity to work together and support each other as a group, as well as the satisfaction of representing their country. Team players also enjoy the experience of courtside coaching and working towards a common goal.
Under the Optus Team Tennis Australia banner, junior teams in the 14s,16s and 18s age groups benefit from domestic and international competition in events such as the World Junior Tennis Competition (14s), Junior Davis & Fed Cup (16s) and Junior Grand Slams (18s).
In 2006 the Optus Australian Junior Fed Cup and Davis Cup teams both qualified for the world finals, with the Optus Australian Junior Fed Cup team finishing seventh at the world final in Barcelona and the Optus Australian Junior Davis Cup team finishing in 14th position.
There were 19 international Optus Team Tennis Australia tours during 2006, with 463 days of international competition in 25 countries.
