In 2005 the Optus High Performance players programme was established. The specialist academy forms an elite group of athletes striving to become the 'best of the best' and has the goal of creating world champions.
The players are offered either full or partial scholarships at one of Tennis Australia's National High Performance Academies in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide. Players are aged between 13 and 18 and selection is based on ranking, results and performance and is evaluated every six months. To maintain their position in the programme the athletes need to meet high standards relating to performance, behaviour and attitude.
Optus High Performance Players are provided with a wide range of services including coaching support, strength and conditioning training, sports psychology and access to Tennis Australia’s international training bases.
There are currently 13 Australian athletes that form the program of which Ben Weekes currently holds a full scholarship.
Optus High Performance Players, are recruited in to Tennis Australia's national programs and all hold either a full or part scholarship.
