David Epstein joined Optus in April 2012 as Vice President, Corporate and Regulatory Affairs and is responsible for Optus’ legal, media, government and regulatory functions.
David is an experienced corporate affairs executive, with a background in regulatory and public affairs, both internationally and in Australia. He has worked in government, corporate consultancy, aviation, resources and the telecommunications industry.
He was most recently the Group Head of Public Affairs at BHP Billiton, where he managed global public affairs strategy, as well as government relations and group corporate communications. Prior to joining BHP Billiton, he was the inaugural Group Executive, Government & Corporate Affairs at Qantas Airways Limited.
David was Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister (2007 – 2008) immediately prior to joining Qantas. His background in Federal Government includes staff positions with two Cabinet Ministers and six years as Federal Government media director for two Prime Ministers, the Hon Robert Hawke and the Hon Paul Keating. He was Chief of Staff to the Leader of Opposition the Hon Kim Beazley (1997 – 1999).
David has also been Executive Director of the Australian Electrical and Electronic Manufacturer’s Association (AEEMA), and its major operating body the Australian Telecommunications Industry Association (ATIA). He then worked as a senior telecommunications executive, and as a director and shareholder of corporate advisory firm, Government Relations Australia.
He is a member of the Board of the European Australian Business Council and Opera Australia, as well as a participant in the Australian American Leadership Dialogue and the Australia New Zealand Leadership Forum. In his spare time David travels, cycles, reads and maintains a growing interest in social media.
