Optus unplugs Broadband
29 Nov 2007

Optus announced today its attack on the wireless broadband market with the launch of new pricing and an expanded product offering within the Optus Wireless Broadband (OWB) portfolio for Consumer, Small and Medium Business (SMB) and Optus Business customers.

"OWB pricing is groundbreaking, with monthly fees comparable to what the competition is charging for fixed broadband. A quick comparison will reveal just how aggressive our new mobile broadband offers are," Warren Hardy, Managing Director, Optus Consumer, said.

Optus customers can access two products within the Optus Wireless Broadband portfolio:

  • InZone - InZone is perfect for consumers or small businesses who want broadband access without the need for a phone line. It is suitable for customers who want the ability to move their internet connection from room to room, or are in areas that have previously been dominated by the incumbent.
  • Roamer - Roamer is targeted at personal or businesses users who want broadband that moves with them whether they are at a cafe, in a park, on the train or working out of the office.

"These are 'plug and play' products, providing flexibility for customers to access the internet anywhere there is Optus 3G/HSPA or GSM coverage.

"Customers will be able to access speeds of up to 3.6 Mbps° available on the Optus 3G/HSPA network - allowing them to be mobile whether they are downloading music, accessing social networks or checking their email on the go.

"Continuing the popularity of offers like Optus Fusion, OWB proves that listening to our customers and responding with innovative products that push the boundaries of price and customer value is the right strategy for our business," Mr Hardy said.

With increasingly mobile workforces, enterprise and small business customers are looking for solutions that allow them to do business anywhere at anytime, through any access point.

Using OWB, SMB customers can keep in touch with their business by working wirelessly and Optus Business customers can now access their corporate network and business applications securely from any location, enabling them to be more responsive and productive.

Optus will begin a national advertising campaign for OWB in early 2008. OWB products are available through Optus sales channels including Optus World and Optus 'yes' Shops.

°Actual speeds will vary and may be slower. Many factors affect speeds such as: your location and distance from the Optus Mobile tower; the network used to connect to the service (the Optus 3G/HSPA or GSM network); the number of users sharing the network; the source of your download; general Internet traffic; your hardware and software configuration.

Note to Editor:

  • Optus continues to expand its 3G HSPA mobile network, enhancing the quality and speed of mobile services across the country in its planned rollout of 3G coverage to 96 percent of the population.
  • To assist customers in getting connected, Optus has removed the upfront wireless modem costs and introduced a Wireless Modem rental plan. For a small monthly fee customers will be able to rent an Optus Wireless Modem.
