Optus Mobile has made viewing television on mobile phones a reality with its launch of a new streaming service offering 24x7 retransmission of the ABC and SBS and transmission of CNN's international service.
Allen Lew, Managing Director of Optus Mobile, said Optus had again led the market with the Australian-first launch of television over mobile.
"There are times when it will be convenient to catch up on the entire evening news bulletin or watch your favourite program on the run.
"Armed with the latest mobile phones, our customers will be able to view live TV programs and access a wealth of other entertainment, information and mobile content via Optus Zoo," Mr Lew said.
Zoo is the brand created for a comprehensive suite of mobile services including:
- TV streaming (retransmission of ABC and SBS and transmission of CNNi)
- Video downloads including Channel 10 Sports Tonight, American Associated Press Television News (APTN) international news, Australian Associated Press (AAP) and Channel Seven Finance News Updates, and 1-2 minute update news bulletins from channels 7 and 10
- Sports results via WAP sourced from ABC Sport
- Games including new Java games such as XIII, Prince of Persia and Cluedo
- Ringtones, downloads, screen savers and logos
- Horoscopes, jokes and webcams.
A key element in the launch of Zoo is Optus' commitment to ensure customers have access to the majority of services without needing customised handsets said Mr Stuart Tucker, Director of Marketing, Optus Mobile.
"To make using the service easier for customers, Zoo offers a feature that automatically personalises the menu system in accordance with customers' preferences, removing the need to search through endless lists of options.
"Everything about Zoo has been designed to operate seemlessly whether the customer's access point is the web or their mobile," Mr Tucker said.
Zoo content and services will be available from today and Optus' standard WAP and GPRS prices apply. Viewing television over the mobile is free on handsets supporting video streaming.
The television streaming services will be available over the latest range of handsets on the market including the Nokia 3650, 3660 and 6600, Nokia N-Gage and PDAs such as the O2 XDA. Other Zoo content and services will be accessible over most data-capable handsets.
