Browsing the internet on Optus Mobile
19 Jun 2003

Optus today became the first mobile phone company in Australia to offer customers with Java-capable mobile phones a free WebViewer J2ME download enabling customers to browse the internet.

Developed by Reqwireless, and packaged for Optus customers in conjunction with the Optus-Nokia FutureLab, WebViewer is a small, fast and feature-rich web browser that can be installed on any mobile phone that has Java capability.

"Now you can use your mobile phone to get information from the internet. This is useful when you're waiting for someone or if you want to get urgent information that is important to you when you're away from your home or office," Managing Director Optus Mobile, Mr Allen Lew said.

Recognising that customers of 'new age' Java-capable handsets have high expectations of their mobile experience, Optus will offer its customers a free WebViewer J2ME download from its Yes Info2You site.

"Many people think that Java is only for games; WebViewer demonstrates that its application is broader as it takes the mobile internet experience to a new level of sophistication. Customers will be able to experience the same rich internet content that they are used to browsing on a desktop on their mobile handset," Mr Lew said.

"Optus has recognised the ability of Reqwireless' popular HTML browser to drive revenue through mobile network usage. We are pleased to be working with Optus to provide their customers with an improved web browsing experience," Roger Skubowius, President, Reqwireless said. To access the download, customers follow the 'What's hot' link on the Yes Info2You Wap site.

Handsets that support Java are the Nokia 3530, 3650, 5100, 6100, 6610, 6800, 7210, 7250, 7650 and 8910I; the Motorola T720 and V60I; the Samsung SGH-S100, SGH-S300, SPH-A500 and SPH-N400; the Siemens S55 and the Sony Ericsson P800 and T610.

*access to standard HTML sites using HTTP only - some sites such as secure sites (ie. internet banking, email, etc) and sites with Multi Media Flash, Java Script etc are not available.
