Optus assistance to victims of Bali tragedy
16 Oct 2002

Optus will waive all international charges for fixed line calls from Australia to Bali for Optus' directly connected and preselected customers, for a week long period starting midnight Saturday October 12 Australian Eastern Standard Time.

Optus will waive all international charges for calls from an Optus mobile to any number in Bali during this period. Optus will waive charges for calls from an Optus mobile where the Optus customer was in Bali during this period.

This will include charges for outgoing calls from the mobile, and the international roaming charge for incoming calls which the customer would ordinarily pay.

For customers who may have already been billed for these calls since Saturday night, Optus will arrange to credit these customers on a subsequent bill.

Optus will also implement arrangements to waive bills to our customers who died in the Bali tragedy, upon notification by their family to the customer service number below.

Optus has provided a number of mobile handsets and prepaid calling cards to the Darwin Hospital for use by victims and their families.

Optus will work with Government to put further such arrangements in place to provide assistance in relation to telephone calls between hospitalised victims of the tragedy and their immediate family.

Specific arrangements will be announced once they are finalised between Optus and the Government.

Should an Optus customer experience any difficulties with these arrangements, Optus has set up a special customer service number that will be available from tomorrow morning.

The customer service number is 1800 501 888.
