In the lead up to Mobile Number Portability, Optus today unveiled its new rate plans and announced they will not be charging a porting fee for mobile customers choosing to say 'yes' to Optus.
Finola Thompson, Acting Managing Director Mobile said Optus is celebrating that the last barrier to competition in the mobile market is about to finally come down.
"Since Optus was born in competition, we revel in the opportunity to fight on equal footing for the right to attract new customers " especially those that have long been "number bound".
"We expect to be a winner out of MNP, but mobile consumers will be the big winners because carriers will not only have to attract customers but keep their current customers happy," she said.
"That's why we have put together offers that will attract new customers but at the same time continue to deliver the benefits of being on the Optus network to existing customers."
"Under MNP, we believe mobile savvy consumers are looking for the best overall value which includes choice, good rate plans, great coverage and excellent customer service," Ms Thompson said.
The aggressive move by Optus to target both the consumer and business markets with new offers is yet another example of Optus challenging the way mobile services are delivered in Australia.
In the consumer market, Optus's new, 'yes' Tailored mobile rate plans give contract customers the choice to mix voice and data as part of their included call component.
"Consumers asked us if they could include things like unlimited VoiceMail or SMS or WAP as part of the included call component of their bill - we are saying 'yes' you can."
Optus believes that MNP will bring increased opportunity to attract a larger share of the business market.
"Having to change a mobile number when changing mobile carriers has proven a major disincentive for 'number bound' business customers. Now, for the first time, these customers have real choice."
"That's why we are launching new Business Plus rate plans which give businesses even better value for money on their mobiles.
"With MNP, business customers will be able to join Optus and take advantage of our great deals, without losing their number."
