Optus is backing the mobile data future by updating the design of its Optus World stores to meet the demand for new mobile data products.
Matt Davey, Director Mobile Consumer Sales, said the revamp of its franchise stores is designed to help customers get into the data world by offering the latest technology.
"We want Optus World stores to be the one-stop-shop for wireless mobile communications," he said.
"But as mobile technology gets more complex it can also become more confusing - that's why in our new stores customers can try before they buy," he said.
"Our research tells us customers are more confident if they can touch and feel a phone or a PDA device - so we've created an environment where they take a hands-on approach.
"The new stores will feature user-friendly 'data walls' where customers can view and play with the latest technology including handheld computers, palms and personal data devices."
While standard mobile phones will remain popular and prominent in the stores, Optus' expects 25 per cent of its revenue will be from data services by the year 2005.
"Our bundled kits of a mobile phone and an iPac handheld computer sold-out over Christmas highlighting the growing popularity of products which give customers the freedom and flexibility to get information while on the move," Mr Davey said.
Over 20 of Optus' 147 franchised Optus World stores will be part of the initial new fitout including Optus World's at Erina, Hurstville, Bankstown and Miranda in Sydney as well as stores in Melbourne.
