Businesses get broadband alternative with first competitive national DSL network completed
11 Apr 2001

Australian businesses can now take advantage of competitive high-speed, low cost Digital Subscriber Line access with the completion of XYZed's national DSL network.

Broadband access provider XYZed now offers comprehensive coverage of capital cities and key metropolitan areas of the country. The XYZed network footprint reaches approximately 75 per cent of businesses in those areas.

XYZed has 103 exchanges enabled to provide high-speed DSL. The company is the largest alternative provider of copper based broadband services and the only provider to wholesale a business grade service to retail carriers and other communications providers.

"The XYZed network is a considerable asset for Cable & Wireless Optus. It provides alternative high-speed access for our existing corporate and business customers, but more importantly enables us to expand our reach into new geographic areas," said Chris Hancock, Managing Director of Cable & Wireless Optus' Data and Business Services Division.

"Australian businesses have had little or no choice of access provider in the market for high-speed services," said Stephe Wilks, Managing Director of XYZed.

"Many businesses which have not had access to fibre have been forced to pay the high cost of leased lines or ISDN services. For medium and smaller sized businesses these services are often prohibitively priced," said Mr Wilks.

"XYZed's network has been built to provide business grade, high-speed broadband access. We offer the guaranteed bandwidth and security that businesses need for their mission critical operations and to capitalise on new e-business applications. Our DSL services are also dramatically more cost effective than alternate high-speed options like leased line or ISDN services," he said.

The XYZed network has already proven its capability to provide reliable high quality business grade service and to provision services in just 20 days - faster than the common industry practice. The company has been selling services since September 2000 and has a number of retail carriers on board who are re-selling its service to end-users.

Construction of the XYZed network began in April 2000 when the company was formed as an independent subsidiary of Cable & Wireless Optus. XYZed had 50 exchanges operational nationally when commercial services were launched in September 2000 and commissioned another 53 exchanges in the following 7 months to complete the network rollout in March ahead of schedule.

The XYZed network consists of 40 exchanges in Sydney and surrounds with two in the ACT, 28 in Melbourne, 13 in Brisbane, 11 in Perth and nine in Adelaide.
