Cable & Wireless Optus announced that it was successful in bidding for spectrum in today's 27 GHz auction held by the Australian Communications Authority.
The spectrum is best suited for broadband wireless access, including the use of Local Multipoint Distribution System (LMDS) technology.
Chris Hancock, Managing Director, Data & Business Services, said that Cable & Wireless Optus was very interested in all access technologies that provide an opportunity to expand reach, access new customers, reduce the costs of services and allow the introduction of greater competition to the marketplace.
"LMDS is an important element of our strategy, allowing us to provide customers with a range of access technologies. It will enable us to directly connect many more customers to the Cable & Wireless Optus network, bypassing the 'last mile' connectivity arrangements we have made in the past."
LMDS technology delivers high speed data and voice services, can be implemented quickly, scaled up easily and provides businesses with a greater choice of communication options.
Mike Callen, General Manager of Agility Networks said the spectrum would be used to deploy an LMDS customer access network across Australia, introducing real competition to many regional centres for the first time.
"Agility will roll out a network using a proven LMDS technology.
"Over the last year, we have conducted a comprehensive LMDS investigation and have successfully trialled the equipment of vendors in a dozen regional and metropolitan locations. We know our preferred technology works well," he said.
Today, Agility Networks has a fully operational LMDS network providing coverage in all eight capital cities and four major regional centres.
"As part of our testing program, we already have trial services connected to 35 business customers. From here, our rollout will focus on the business districts of most metropolitan areas in the capital cities, and many of the major regional centres," he said.
Agility Networks, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cable & Wireless Optus, will use a wholesale model for marketing its fixed wireless services, including LMDS.
"Our services and products will be available wholesale to other service providers, including Cable & Wireless Optus, and ISPs. In turn, Agility's customers will be able to offer a true broadband high-speed wireless service to their customers," said Mr Callen.
"We are keen to work with other players, particularly in regional and metropolitan areas."
Mr Hancock said that Agility's LMDS operations form part of its charter to develop all current and future fixed wireless technology for Cable & Wireless Optus.
"We have generated excitement in the marketplace and, with the spectrum acquisition, can begin operation immediately.
"Agility is open for business. The company now has spectrum; has obtained a carrier licence; has proven its technology; and has generated high levels of interest from customers."
