Optus gives WAP to pre-paid mobile
20 Dec 2000

Cable & Wireless Optus today launched Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) services to pre-paid mobile customers.

Ms Finola Thompson, General Manager, Mobile Internet & Data, Cable & Wireless Optus said pre-paid customers now have access to the latest technology on the market.

"Pre-paid customers are often the most techno-savvy. They are high users of SMS and we expect them to quickly take advantage of WAP this Christmas," she said.

"Using Optus Networker pre-paid customers can now send emails, look up their stars, check-out the cricket scores, use the gig guide and find the location of the nearest cinema - and see what movies are playing.

"WAP will give pre-paid users freedom to get the latest information they need on their mobile phone, anywhere, anytime," Ms Thompson said.

Optus Networker currently gives Optus' GSM mobile customers access to a wide variety of applications and information services including: email, news, weather, sport, movie listings, horoscopes, financial information, location-based services, share trading, shopping and banking.

Two WAP handsets will be available to pre-paid customers including the Mitsubishi Mars and the Motorola v2288 which also has an FM radio.

Optus Networker services are charged at a flat rate of 22 cents per 30 seconds with no access fee and no flagfall.
