Cable & Wireless Optus today launched the company's first dedicated data centre in Melbourne. The facility will cater to the growing demand for fully managed IP hosting and co-location services in Victoria.
The Hon. John Brumby, Victorian Treasurer and Minister for State and Regional Development officially opened the $1.5 million centre in St Kilda.
Mr Brumby said the Victorian Government is working hand in hand with companies like Cable & Wireless Optus to position the state as a high-tech centre of excellence.
"The Victorian Government recognises the vital role that communications technology plays in building a robust knowledge economy.
"I am pleased to open the Cable & Wireless Optus Melbourne Data Centre - a major new development for Victorian business," Mr Brumby said.
John Filmer, Director Enterprise, Cable & Wireless Optus said the Melbourne Data Centre demonstrates Cable & Wireless Optus' ongoing commitment to Victorian business.
"Since the company's inception in 1992, Cable & Wireless Optus has invested around $2 billion in Victoria. This centre delivers invaluable communications infrastructure to Victoria and acts as an accelerator to business," he said.
The new facility is an integral part of Cable & Wireless Optus' e-solutions strategy, providing innovative data hosting services for the delivery of applications over the internet.
"Our Victorian business customers are increasingly demanding services to assist them with the explosion of the data market," said Mr Filmer.
"Success in this market will derive from the speed and ease with which information can be accessed, exchanged and shared. The Melbourne Data Centre provides this flexibility in a secure and managed environment, suitable for mission critical data.
"This world-class facility enables our customers to choose a customised data management service that meets their needs," he said.
The Melbourne Data Centre is dedicated to data management services for corporate and Government clients. Customised services include webhosting, hosting for Application Service Providers (ASPs), data storage and disaster recovery as well as co-location.
