Cable & Wireless Optus and Cisco Systems announce alliance to accelerate IP adoption
07 Nov 2000

Cable & Wireless Optus and Cisco Systems today announced they have formed an alliance to accelerate the market penetration of IP-based products and services in Australia, through joint product development, marketing and sales initiatives.

The alliance of cooperation is an Australian first and has been formed to encourage the implementation of next generation of IP (Internet Protocol) networks, infrastructure and support systems in the 'Data and Business' market.

The alliance will build on the long-standing relationship between Optus and Cisco, leveraging Optus' membership of the Cisco PartnerWays program and the Cisco Powered Network (CPN) marketing initiative.

David Stokes-McKeon, Director E-Solutions, Cable & Wireless Optus said the alliance was proof the days of a simple Vendor/Service Provider relationship were over and that there was a need for organisations to work more closely towards a true partnership.

"The alliance provides for collaboration at all levels of the two companies and across all disciplines, R&D, technical, operational, systems, sales, marketing and channel development. It is based on the joint vision to drive additional value to the market place through bold IP initiatives that will re-shape the future for all our stakeholders," said Mr Stokes-McKeon.

"Through this alliance, Cisco will work towards assisting with the e-enablement of Optus. Both companies jointly plan, develop and implement an e-enablement methodology across the organisation. This methodology will also drive a soon to be announced joint go to-market 'e-business' initiative into the Data & Business market.

"Similarly, Cisco's JumpStart - & Cisco Powered Network (CPN) programs will drive additional revenues for CWO," said Mr Stokes-McKeon.

Mr Terry Walsh, Cisco Managing Director, Australia & New Zealand said the alliance was a natural extension of the already strong relationship between Cisco and Cable & Wireless Optus.

"Clearly, the emergence of IP as the global standard for telecommunications brings opportunities to companies in the Service Provider space. Cable & Wireless Optus is a leader in this emerging IP-based new economy and Cisco expects the alliance will be mutually beneficial," said Mr Walsh.

"Through this alliance, we have the opportunity to work together to create new markets and find ways to improve, innovate and re-invent products and services with a focus on IP initiatives," he said.
