Cable & Wireless Optus today announced another first by bringing "the best of the Net" to its mobile phone customers through the launch of significant online partnerships and a range of new content.
Customers can soon enjoy the leading portals Excite Australia, ninemsn, start.com.au and Yahoo! Australia & NZ on the Optus Mobile Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) service.
In addition, five new WAP handsets will be on the market by the end of August including the leading brand names Ericsson, Motorola and Siemens.
Finola Thompson, General Manager, Mobile Internet & Data, Cable & Wireless Optus said that Optus is leading the way in bringing exciting internet content to mobile phone customers.
"We are working with leading internet brand names to ensure our customers get access to the best WAP enabled content available. We are bringing the future of mobile phone technology to our customers early," Ms Thompson said.
Optus Mobile WAP customers will be able to choose from a menu of leading portals by early September.

Customers will also be able to access additional WAP content from start.com.au and Yahoo! Australia & NZ like:
- address book
- calendar
- mail and more
Optus has also added the ability for customers to personalise content by changing menus to suit themselves.
"Now you can bookmark your favorite content, go straight to your local cinema guide, check the top 10 shares in your share portfolio or update your diary," said Ms Thompson.
Other new content includes an online diary and calendar, an address book and a 'to do list'. Also new are lotto results, TV Guides, taxi details, travel schedules and offers.
"We are giving our customers faster access to the information they want anytime, anywhere," Ms Thompson said.
The new WAP enabled handsets are the Ericsson R320s, Motorola L708+, Motorola V2288 and Siemens handsets S35I and M35i.
With the launch of the Motorola V2288, WAP handsets are now available at the affordable price of $"0" when connecting to the 'yes' Contact 20 plan.
