Cable & Wireless Optus has begun its examination of the Government's discussion paper on tendering the USO and is very encouraged by the approach being taken.
"The Government has adopted a flexible and consultative approach," said Stephe Wilks, Director, Regulatory and Public Affairs. "This is just what is needed to allow industry and consumers to sort out the issues involved.
"We have already made a number of submissions to the Government and we believe that, with the correct technology choices and allocation process, it will be possible for carriers other than Telstra to provide services to rural and remote Australia.
"Cable & Wireless Optus is examining the supply of USO services by satellite. If it is commercially and technically feasible, we will certainly be a bidder to provide the service," Mr Wilks said.
