Starlight has been brightening the lives of seriously ill and hospitalised children and their families throughout Australia since 1988. Whether in or out of hospital, Starlight’s programs provide a positive distraction to children in their time of need.
Optus, our people and Optus Stores have been proud supporters of Starlight for 16 years, raising approximately $2 million in this time. We have supported Starlight each year through activities such as Starlight Day, the Optus Golf Challenge and staff initiated fundraising events. Optus people also donate to Starlight through our Workplace Giving Program – Answering the Call, which Optus matches dollar for dollar.
Over the 16 years, the funds raised by Optus and our staff have gone towards Wishgranting and the Captain Starlight program. In 2008, there were 76 Captain Starlight’s nationally – and their sole purpose was to entertain and engage seriously ill children by distracting them from their illness and pain and bring smiles to their faces.
This year, Optus is proud to be taking our support to a new level by becoming a partner of Livewire, a free, safe and fun online community for young people, aged over 10 and under 21, living with a serious illness, chronic health condition or disability. It’s a supportive place where they can hang out, chat online and share experiences with other young people going through similar experiences.
Traditionally, Optus has supported fund raising for Starlight through Starlight Day. But this year we will be extending our fundraising efforts from a single day to the whole month of September by supporting Connectember. All funds raised by Optus through the Connectember campaign will go towards Starlight’s Livewire Program.
