Optus and BCT use satellite to bridge regional broadband divide
04 Dec 2002

Businesses and residents across regional Victoria will have access to high-speed broadband internet services as a result of a three-year satellite deal announced by Optus and Bendigo Community Telco (BCT) today.

Bendigo households and businesses can now enjoy the same quality high-speed internet access that is available in metro areas through SatWeb, a satellite broadband service.

Chris Hancock, Managing Director Optus Wholesale said, the internet is an amazing tool for bridging the communication gap in regional Australia.

"Faster access to the internet can aid in research for farmers, help people enrolled in distance learning or open up opportunities to professionals wanting to live in rural and regional areas," he said.

"We are proud to work with BCT, who like Optus, offer innovative solution to meet the needs of people living in regional Australia.

"Our companies are working together to address the insufficient services to these areas, as well as helping to increase competition. Satellite services such as SatWeb, are solutions that will lead to better opportunities for the region, " said Mr Hancock.

Andrew Cairns, BCT Chief Executive Officer said, BCT is providing a communication solution for people outside the metro areas.

"SatWeb is ideal for delivering fast internet to areas without suitable telecommunications infrastructure. With out the ability to have high-speed connectivity and access to information and commerce will disadvantage our competitiveness and limit our region's future.

"SatWeb is a key component to help regional Australia overcome this challenge. Access to information is as essential as traditional services such as water, electricity and gas.

"No matter where you live in Australia, you can use the SatWeb service. SatWeb gets over the hurdle of geography - and another benefit is that by using SatWeb customers can save money by not needing a phone line or connection to an internet service provider (ISP)," said Mr Cairns.
